A controversial documentary on the exiled Uyghur leader Rebiya Kadeer was screened at an international film festival in Melbourne today [August 8, 200] despite China's attempts to prevent it.
Hundreds attended the world premiere of the film "The 10 Conditions of Love" at the Melbourne Town Hall as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival.
Director Jeff Daniels thanked the organizers of the festival and the audience who attended it for not bowing to Chinese threats, saying "I congratulate you for standing up for the basic freedom of being heard," according to an Australian Associated Press report.
China has accused Kadeer, who was also in attendance, of orchestrating recent bloody clashes in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region between ethnic minority Uyghurs and members of China's ethnic Han majority.
