NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2023

In this month's newsletter the UNPo wants to highlight various activities and updates for October 2023:

First of all, we would like to congratulate the World Sindhi Congress for hosting their 35th International Conference on Sindh in London, which also featured Baloch representatives.

Over the month of October, we had been working on several different projects which include:

  1. The UNPO submitted a report to the UN OHCHR regarding human rights abuses faced by the Indigenous Khmer-Krom community in Vietnam. We also provided information to the Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Development in anticipation of their visit to Vietnam.

  2. The UNPO organized a week-long study session in collaboration with the EFAy and Council of Europe, focusing on youth activists from various minority and indigenous communities.

  3. We sponsored representatives from several member communities to participate in a training course on UN human rights mechanisms.

  4. The UNPO Secretariat attended the Central Tibetan Administration’s Geneva Forum, which focused on "Human Rights in Decline: Regions under China." The forum featured discussions on the situation in Tibet, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Southern Mongolia, and East Turkestan.

  5. Our work on cases of transnational repression, where authoritarian states target activists and diaspora communities abroad, has been gaining more and more international attention and it raising attention to the issue of transnational repression internationally

  6. The UNPO and the Congress of World Hmong People jointly submitted a report to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) regarding the vulnerability of Hmong women and girls in Lao PDR due to their ethnicity and gender. The report highlights persistent rights violations and calls for international recognition and action.
