Mr. Asgar Can was re-elected chairperson of the East Turkestan Union in Europe at its 27th GA held in Munich on 27 January 2002. Mr. Can has been leading the Union for many years.
It was also decided at the GA to change the name of the Union to the “Uighur Cultural and Social Union in Europe”, while all member delegates overwhelmingly voted in favour of buying a real-estate during 2002, which would house a school, guests rooms, a meeting room, offices, and a mosque to meet the needs of the Uighur community in Germany. In future, the GA is to be held every two years.
